Grit Guard Grit Guard Insert Reviews
Professional Detailer Reviews
The simple invention of the Grit Guard Insert has completely changed the way that we all wash automobiles. Before the grit guard was invented it was hard to keep the dirt from the automobile out of the wash medium you were using.
Customer Reviews
Fits perfectly in the DI 3.5 gal bucket. It doesn't semi float & move around like others I've had.
A must have when hand washing your car. Easily keeps the dirt and debris away from wash mitt.
This is a great grit guard and includes finger holes to get it out. I use this in a bucket from an auto parts store and it doesn't fit all the way in the bottom (sits 3-4" off bottom) but this is OK with me. I bought so I would have two grit guards in my rinse bucket so this perfectly fits on top of the other in my rinse bucket.
I resisted buying this for a long time, too long. If you wash your own car, it's really a must have. Rocks, etc will be released by your sponge, brush or whatever and fall to the bottom of the pail, under this guard. Thus lessening the chance of you picking them back up again and "washing" some nice scratches into your finish. The finger holes are a niche touch.
It does it's intended job but I couldn't bring myself to pay their prices for 5 gallon buckets since they're all the same anyways, right? Wrong! I bought much cheaper buckets at three different stores now and they're all a bit different diameters! I hear the buckets at Lowe's are too big so the grit guard floats to the top. I can tell you the ones at Walmart and a couple auto parts stores are too narrow at the bottom and the grit guard only goes down anywhere from 2/3 of the way down to a mere 8"/20cm from the top.
Save yourself time, headaches, and money in the end and just buy the buckets here that they're made to fit.

Fits perfectly and will accomplish what it is designed for.
An essential safeguard to avoid particles from being redeposited again.
Doesn't fit all five gallon buckets.
Doesn't fit all five gallon buckets.
Does a great job at releasing dirt and debris.
A person could get by without these but why would you. For the money spent they keep you from worrying about doing damage to your paint job so I say they are well worth the price!
Grit guard works great and I use one in each of my cleaning buckets which I have color coordinated in BLUE for WASH, RED for RINSE and BLACK for WHEELS. I also use a washboard in my RED RINSE bucket. These are a wash mitt's best friend.
Does what it was designed to do.
Does the best when leaving dirt on the bottom picking up the wash mitts in the buckets no contamination coming back!
Using these for a two bucket wash. Fits the buckets and stands off the bottom of the buckets. Seen some that are just a screen.

I have use one of these for over 12 years to wash all my buffing pads. Well worth the money. Very durable product.
I use four washing mitt's bought 2 of these one red and one blue keeps them clean
Does as described and works good. First time using a grit guard.
I have one in each of my buckets (soap, clean water, and wheels). They work well and certainly seem to help keep the grit away from wash mitts, wheel woolies, etc.
Have two, one at each home location. Use it on every wash.
My only regret is that I didn't buy this sooner.
Needed another Grit Guard, this one does the trick.
Purchased a second grit guard for my wash bucket making it easier for me to contact with my wash pad with a full bucket of suds, without having water reach past my elbow. Grit Guard products are always well-designed, of high and consistent material quality, and reasonably priced.
Cheap Investment and a must have for anyone who hand washes cars! They last for years and years!
Keeps my washing mitt free of abrasive grime and dirt. Great product!
Should have had this years ago. Great product. I do need to get another one. You see the dirt after your done, in the bottom, where it belongs.
I bought different colors to help distinguish clean vs dirty water. They work! I was amazed how my clean bucket water stayed clean!!!
It does just what it says it does , great product
Does a good job of keeping dirt at the bottom of the wash bucket. As advertised!
A must have. Great quality.
Everyone needs two Grit Guards, simple easy effective.

Simple, inexpensive and effective.
Great product! Don't know why we waited so long to get one, but we're ordering more!!
Simply it works great. Be careful on what you use for 5 gallon bucket. Walmart ones taller and narrower than std version. Insert will not go lower enough!
Works great, should have got 2 of them.
Definitely, I find myself looking at car service/ dealerships for the same and will not let them wash my car%u2026the bucket insert is GREAT
Absolute requirement for someone to values their work
Something I originally thought I wouldn't need but gave it a shot since it is very fairly priced. Not sure what I had been thinking...don't know how I went so many years damaging my car instead of caring for it properly.
First time I've been able to try these out and even though I didn't really notice visually if they worked, I had 100% piece of mind knowing I wasn't putting grit back into my MIT to wash again. I did notice I created no new swirls unlink when I didn't use guards before so I believe that must be a good sign these are a must have if you are using the two bucket method like I do.
Does a great job keeping the grit safely at the bottom of the bucket instead of floating around and getting stuck in your wash mitt
Works nice, wish they make them for smaller diameter buckets rather than five gallon size.
The guard seems to work as advertised.
Great product
This is a MUST have if you worry about how to maintain a swirl free finish!!
A must for washing your car. removes the grit from your rag or wash mitt.
A great product, really soft and easy to use without the cuff on many others.
The Grit Guard works well with two bucket washing. Install the grit guard in your second bucket with clean water. If rinse water become dirty, dump the rinse bucket and refill with fresh water.
It is easy to use and works better than expected. I was shocked at how much dirt it was able to remove from my mitt. The only issue I had was that it doesnt fit all the way down in my bucket. However, that doesnt take anything away from this product. It is a must have item.
A bandwagon worth jumping onto. If you prevent one scratch, you've more than paid for the Grit Guard.
The only comment I can make is it does the job it was designed for and I don't know why I waited so long to get one.
I have no idea why it took me so long to get this for my wash bucket! Excellent product! Get one for each bucket you use.
Excellent, practical product. Looks and works just as described. Excellent packaging and communication, too.
Fits my 5-gallon bucket that I purchased for 2 bucks. Save your money with the buckets, but get two of these grits guards for your wash and rinse buckets.
Does what it was made to do. Slip in and leave it. Pour out water when done and rinse easy.
Surprisingly well built. While I haven't owned them very long, I can almost guarantee this will last a lifetime (provided you don't do something like leave them out in the sun). Easy to take in and out of the 5 gallon buckets that I use from Home Depot. I even used one of these to build my own pad washer for less than $15.
These are a must have, not a whole lot to say about them, they work great, simple, yet works very good,it really does what it is meant for. First time i used it, i took the grit guard off and stuck my hand in the bucket, on the bottom there was bunch of sand, again if you are serious about your car, this is simply a must have, oh and buy at least 2 if not more.
Definite must have if you care about your paint. Average joe car washer won't care about this item, but us car guys definitely have to have this!
These things are great a must have. Your mitt could be covered in dirt and in a few seconds you would have a clean mitt. Get more then one you will need one for your rinse and your soap bucket.
It works great. It fits great. Great price. A must have.
It doesn't stay at the bottom! It floats right back up to the top! Last I checked, my water doesn't have salt in it! I'm using buckets from Lowes and the guard fits perfectly in there but floats immediately to the top when I take my sponge out.
These guards work great and are essential for proper two-bucket washings. Recommend buying one color for wash bucket and one color for rinse bucket so you are not confused where to place your mitt while washing.
I bought 3 total, 1 for my washing bucket, and 1 each for my 2 rinse buckets. I like them, it's not fought of the product, but it isn't snug in the 5 gal buckets I got from Lowe's. But in time will find a remedy.
First time user. Impressed with ability to trap dirt/debris. Fits snug in a 5 gal bucket. Only regret is should have bought 2.
Glad I bought this as it does an excellent job of keeping the grit and dirt from being recycled on my mitt as I continue washing.
Works great, can use with Home Depot bucket's too
I mentioned in another review that I am new to the availability of many auto detailing products. Grit guards make a ton of sense and seem to work like a charm. I purchased one for my rinse bucket but will be ordering a second for the wash bucket on my next order.

this is a must have product that will keep the dirt off of your wash mitt which keeps it off of the car.
I have recently been enlightened to all of the great products available in the automotive detailing world. This grit guard is easily in the top 5 of all the products I have bought to this point. Highly recommended to keep the swirls down. I'll probably be buying more!
Bought a blue one for my wash bucket and a red one for my rinse bucket. Well worth the price, the amount of grit in the rinse bucket made me glad to have read about these online. Wash bucket was squeaky clean.
Great product. It makes a very quick and effective way to remove debris from my mit or sponge. I should have gotten one years ago.
I never realized how much dirt was in the bucket until I dumped out my rinse water. Then I saw how much is released by using the grit guard. love it!!!!
I bought one but I actually didn't use it at first, considering it not to be that big of a deal. I finally did use it the other day though, and now I feel stupid for not using it sooner! The amount of dirt and silt at the bottom of my rinse bucket really made me appreciate how effective this grit guard is. I feel much more confident now that I'm not spreading that dirt around the vehicle as I'm washing.
I only use one grit guard in my rinse bucket. It does what's it's supposed to do. Good precaution againist smearing a dirty wash rag across your paint.
I use two of these grit guards in my wash and rinse bucket. Work as designed and gives you that piece of mind. Pick up the sheep skin wash mitt to use along with this!
A little expensive, but it works well. After my first wash, it was easy to keep my Lake Country sponge clean and upon emptying of the bucket, the guard did a good job of keeping the dirt and sediment on the bottom of the bucket.
If you are still washing your car without a Grit Guard insert, YOU ARE WRONG! This is a cheap preventative measure for hours of polishing hell. Works just as it is intended to. Buy 2. One for suds bucket and one for rinse bucket.
This simple innovation is one of the greatest things to ever happen to auto washing. The girt guard insert fits 5 gallon buckets and allows you to scrape debris off of your wash mitt, making sure you don't in turn rub it into your car's paint, while also keeping the water settled at the bottom of the buckets, where all the debris heads after coming off of your mitt. Do I recommend it? I have bough 7 grit guards, 4 for myself and 3 more as gifts. Finger holes allow for easy placement and removal in buckets. They could not be more easy to use and work really well. Do yourself a favor, buy and use these from now on to wash your car.
This is a must have for any beginner, two bucket wash system with grit guards and you've just saved yourself from a ton of extra work!
It does a great job of keeping the wash medium free from debris. A must have item for the avg car guy and pros alike!!
I bought these grit guards and switched to the two bucket system a while back, unfortunately, the 5 gallon buckets I bought do not accommodate these guards very well, so I'm not sure just how effective they are at the moment. Kind of a disappointment, but buckets are cheap.
I made the mistake of assuming this would fit in any 5 gallon bucket. It does not.
The only problem I had with these grit guards is that I didn't get them sooner. Makes the 2 bucket system really come together.
yes, standard grit guard.
Does the job it's supposed to. Keeps the grit below. I use this in my rinse bucket then have a separate bucket with the soap for cleaning.

I should have gotten these a long time ago.
I got two of these...one for my clean water bucket and one for my soapy water bucket. The amount of grit at the bottom after washing is amazing. You're nuts if you're not using these to wash your car.
Sure helps keep the grit down
i bought 4 of them to try the double bucket method as well as a sheepskin mitt. skeptical at first, I was a follower 1/2 way through washing the first car. having 2 in a bucket made it easier to agitate the mitt with out stirring up the dirt at the bottom. It's amazing that something so simple can be this helpful when washing. Get 4 of them and do the double bucket technique, you'll be glad you did!
Excellent product.
Highly recommended.
One of those products that are simple, yet incredibly effective.
Don't know how I lived without it all these years.
I use one in each of my two car body wash buckets (soap bucket, rinse bucket using the 2 bucket method) and one for my third tire/wheel bucket.
I also use one in my 'microfiber that needs to be washed' bucket to help air circulate.
A must have.

Great product!!! I was skeptical at first but after reading everyone's reviews, I decided to buy one. Wow!!! This thing is great. Will never wash my cars without it.
It's a must have when doing the 2 bucket wash method. I used only one in the rinse bucket and needless to say that all dirt and grime came off the glove easily as I rubbed it across and kept the glove clean.
These things are CLUTCH to performing a good detail. I have to admit I have neglected my wifes HHR for some time. Its black and looked terrible. A lot of dirt and road grime had built up. A previous wash with one bucket and no guard yielded less than favorable results. The most recent wash was with two buckets and two guards. Night and Day! It looks damn near showroom new just from proper washing technique. I now understand how crucial it is. Also it makes a small amount of shampoo go so much further. Great product!
This is a great product and a cost thats easy to justify. Keeps the dirt and grit away from the wash water!! And ultimately a much gentler wash!
Very simply in design and works like a charm when using a two bucket wash method!
One of the most innovative auto detailing accessories ever!
I really dont know why I havent used one until now. Works as advertised and reasonable considering the price. A must have for anyone concerned about using a dirty mitt on a clean vehicle.
I used the two bucket method and actually used a grit guard in both. I was amazed with the amount of dirt these things can get out of sponges. I would definitely recommend these to people serious about protecting their ca/truck paint.
worked great ...all my friends want them now
I've been using the two bucket method for a while now, but not with a grit guard. I used one in the rinse bucket to scrub my wash mitt on, and i noticed that the water in the rinse bucket ended up much dirtier and my wash bucket was still clean.

I highly recommend this and for the price you cannot go wrong with it. Sits at the bottom of the bucket and all the grime and dirt sit within the open slots on the bottom. Where your mitt will not re pick up dirt and put it back on your car. Scrape your mitt against the Grit Guard. Best when used in 2 bucket method. Buy it you'll have peace of mind the next time you wash your car :)
I was a bit skeptic considering this is simply a piece of plastic with spaces in between, but after reading all the great reviews I decided to drop the $10 for it and it is definitely very useful. I'm glad I have it as it makes the whole process of soaping and washing the car safer since I don't have to worry about those pesky rocks.

For $10, you're really wondering what you're getting since it's manufactured of a relatively small amount of plastic. But after using one and seeing the grit sit at the bottom instead of floating around the water, I'd pay 2-3x as much for the result. I'll never wash my car without 1 or 2 of these ever again.

These are must haves, at the minimum for the rinse bucket. After washing my wheels (dedicated mitt) I raked it across the grit guard and couldn't believe how much dirt it took off the mitt.
Everyone should have these!! Well built and worth every penny!
Well worth the money, i was surprised at how much grit was at the bottom of my wash bucket when i used this thing. My sheepskin mitt was totally clean every time i took it out! awesome product.
Extremely simple and cheap enough to make it well worth the money. It actually helps keep the dirt off my mitt and sponges. I really recommend these!
Does exactly what it is supposed to do. It is amazing how much grit ends up in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket after using it.
This is truly one of the essential tools in safely cleaning a car. Anyone reading this must be interested in caring for their vehicle, so if you don't already have one (or two), order it now, before your next car wash. Nuff said.
Seperates clean water from dirt in 5 gallon bucket. Not sure if it will wear out my wash mits faster, but for sure it stops me from scracthing the paint on the car.

It's amazing how much dirt this thing keeps from getting back into your wash mit. Gotta have time...especially if you ONR wash.
It does what it says it does, however it would be well noted that different buckets have different interior diameters. I have both the Autozone bucket and the Home Depot Bucket and in the Autozone bucket it stops about 5-6 inches from the bottom whereas the Home Depot it stops about 1 inch... maybe less.. Makes a difference on amount of water used.

Grit Guard works well. I use it with a wash bucket I purchased from Advance Auto Parts. However, I think it would be better if the guard went further down into the bucket. As it is, the guard stops 5-6 inches from the bottom of the bucket. It does have a nice feature of two finger holes in the middle of the guard that makes installation and especially removal of the guard from the bucket easy.
