5 comments on Paying For A Detail: My Tips For Screening Professionals

    Great article!

Thank you for the perspective. I agree that open talks are imperative. One problem I have found is in a more complete detail expectation by the customer – it helps to have photos / video of how much correction is possible for the customer budget. The % discussion can be vague and misleading. I have found that Open, Honest, and Fair go a long way.

The info is very good and instructive, thank you for sharing it

  4. Jim says:

Recently I was talking with a professional detailer at a car show about paint correction and ceramic coatings. While he was very talkative on the subject of the quality of his work, he was guarded when the discussion became more technical. He was reluctant to discuss the tools, products and techniques he used and even said ” I spent a lot of time and money to become a certified detailer, and I don’t want to give away that knowledge”. I replied that I was not trying to steal his secrets and start a competing business, I was just curious how he would work on my car. And I moved on.

Would that be a red flag when considering hiring him to work on your car? Or was I out of line asking technical questions about what exactly he did?

Hi Jim. To me and most of my loyal clients that would be a BIG RED FLAG. That doesn’t totally mean it should be a deal breaker for you, if you like everything about his presentation and feel comfortable. I know some quality professionals that are a little more guarded than others.

I do totally get where the fear of sharing comes from, yet obviously I practice the opposite. I too have spent an incredible amount of money on products/tools, invested in training, and traveled across Florida to better myself. Paid the price to be accredited with 3 very exclusive coating companies. And yet I am open and encourage education about what and why I do the things that I do. From a business standpoint I justify it for the same reason so many detailers fear (what you can find on YouTube); other can then do it themselves. Yet we battle with the notion we are not really professionals in a business and what we do is simple. My clients tell me they reach a greater level of respect for me after seeing what my world is like. I know that people who also are willing to pay a premium for this, want to be peace of mind that transparency provides.
