IGL Ecoclean Iron – Odorless Iron Remover?!

by

If anyone has any experience with iron remover type products, there is one common denominator.  Iron removers come with a very unpleasant smell that experienced detailers and enthusiasts often accept as an unavoidable consequence of their use.  Enter IGL Ecoclean Iron as one of the latest products to enter the scene.  IGL Ecoclean Iron is advertised as a low odor formula.

Yes, I have a bottle of IGL Iron Remover open (for about 5 minutes) in my house.  I am putting my living room to the test here, so you don’t have to!  Here is the good news, hardly any scent was present.  But before you automatically give up on your other favorite iron removing products, there is a literal cost to this near odor-free experience.

What are you giving up for this experience?

The answer right off the bat is cost, $34.99 for a 500 ml bottle. Other proven brands of iron removers in the 500 ml size bottle:

The Application Process

The product is of a gel-like consistency and upon application, the infamous odor is light.  That is significant for several reasons.  First, I cannot emphasize this enough, shake the product well.  The instructions suggest agitating the product soon after with a microfiber towel.  Agitation has been suggested for other products, but for this product to really work it will likely be a necessity.  Spreading this type of product with a microfiber will help get more even coverage as well. I learned quickly based upon your preference this can be another advantage or a disadvantage for you.  The disadvantage being this product will not rinse off quite as easily as other iron removers.  It may not be a burdensome process, but you should be mindful to be more thorough or possibly wash the car a second time.  I would even recommend a second wash of the car afterward to make sure the product has been removed.  On a positive note, as a result of the gel-like consistency, you likely will have more control over the application (i.e. where the product goes).  If you only want to spray a specific area, this may be the right product for you.  I have seen some color change before and after agitation as pictured above.  Even after spreading the product with a soapy mitt I could still see the product continuing to work.

Conclusion

I have tried my fair share of iron removers and this looks to be a respectable alternative.  If the smell does not bother you and you prefer your current method of applying an iron removing product, especially because of the price point and unique application, this product may not be a practical option for you.  But if you are looking for a unique alternative, I believe IGL Ecoclean Iron to be worthy!

I’ll stick with my Meguiars D1801 iron decon.. since I do iron decon outside, the smell is slight.

I am working on a Honda CRV that has the molded black plastic all around the bottom of the vehicle. Will this or any other iron remover discolor that molded black trim?
