Of course, cleaning the wheels is one of the most important steps in a fresh detail. Who wants to look at a car and see some grime all over the wheels? Proper steps should be taken to clean the wheels, and to also maintain that fresh clean look!
First off, get yourself some Chemical Guys Diablo Wheel Gel or P21S Wheel Gel and a spray bottle. Next get a wheel brush to get deep into the wheel inners (not just the outside need cleaning). I like the EZ detail brush for this.
Liberally spray the wheel gel all over the outside of the wheel and the inners as well. Let this dwell for a bit to allow the cleaner to do its thing! After letting the cleaner dwell for about 5 minutes (more for dirtier wheels), take your brush and agitate and scrub away the brake dust and grime from the wheel. In some cases, a second application may be necessary to deep clean the wheels. Rinse off the wheel with a hard jet of water getting in all the nooks and crannies of the wheel.
After you have cleaned the wheel, it is time to seal them up and add a layer of protection to them. You can use any wax, but a sealant wax will last a bit longer, and offer better protection compared to a carnauba wax. Evenly coat the wheel with your wax and a foam applicator and allow the wax to haze over, and then wiping off the wax. The wheel should be cleaned with soap and water from here on, with the occasional deeper cleaning with a wheel gel every other car wash, or at minimum, once a month! Never let the dirt and grime build back up. Its easier to maintain rather than fix!
